Federal Capital Territory

FCT is the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, with six Area Councils and a population of approximately 800,000 people. Like Lagos, FCT is challenged by rapid population growth, high cost of living, hard-to-reach migrant communities, and broad ethnic diversity. The difficulty of reaching a large transient population is compounded by the lack of traditional institutions with the authority to reach and motivate communities to action.

Communities in all six Area Councils in FCT are beginning to enjoy better healthcare through a partnership between the FCT Administration and the COMPASS Project. Since October 2004, COMPASS has been working in collaboration with government service providers and with community members, policy makers and religious leaders to improve the use of healthcare services.

Achievements:

1. 475 service providers trained to provide improved Reproductive Health (RH) and Family Planning (FP) services
2. $100,000 leveraged through in-kind and cash contributions by community members and local government for implementation of health projects
3. 175,000 visits for RH/FP services
4. 16 community groups, called Community Coalitions, formed to identify, prioritize and resolve health issues
5. Two health facilities renovated and equipped to provide improved RH/FP services to approximately 87,433 beneficiaries
6. 55 health facilities and 150 community-based providers supported to provide quality FP/RH services
7. Three youth-friendly health centers established
8. 3,000 young people reached with information on RH/FP
