Bauchi

Map Bauchi

Situated in the northeast region of Nigeria, Bauchi State has an estimated population of 4.7 million and is divided into three senatorial districts and 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs). Statistics show that key Reproductive Health issues include a high maternal mortality rate (1,549 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births), low acceptance of and use of family planning services (4% contraceptive prevalence rate), poor quality of and access to RH services, early marriage and high fertility rates, harmful traditional practices, and high rates of teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion - the highest in Nigeria.

But rays of hope are shining on citizens of Bauchi State as communities in eight LGAs are beginning to enjoy better healthcare through a partnership between the Bauchi State Government and the COMPASS Project. Since October 2004, COMPASS has been working in collaboration with government service providers and with community members, policy makers and religious leaders to improve the use of healthcare services.

Through a partnership between the Bauchi State Government and the COMPASS Project, communities in eight Local Government Areas (LGAs) are beginning to enjoy better healthcare:

  • Bauchi
  • Alkaleri
  • Kirfi
  • Tafawa Balewa
  • Giade
  • Ningi
  • Misau
  • Zaki

Fifty percent of the state population, totaling about 2.2 million women, adolescents, and men (including military and paramilitary personnel) are benefiting from COMPASS-supported interventions. And with the recent enlargement of COMPASS’ portfolio to include polio eradication, COMPASS provides technical support and professional guidance to the Polio Eradication Initiative Team on behavior change communication as well as training and leadership for core trainers, central trainers, supervisors and vaccinators. The Project is also using newly-formed community groups, called Community Coalitions, to find and vaccinate unvaccinated children.
