Institutional Capacity Building:

Strengthening the Capacity of Nigerian Organizations

COMPASS works to build the capacity of Nigerian Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs), equipping them with the tools and resources necessary to contribute to the development of their country and successfully oversee community-based interventions in education, child health, and reproductive health.

The objective of COMPASS’ institutional capacity building approach is to work with partner organizations to make them stronger, more effective, and more responsive to the needs of the communities they serve.  This is accomplished by providing the NGOs with the tools and technical assistance they need to successfully develop work plans, raise funds, manage resources, and implement activities.

Supporting Nigerian Partners

COMPASS trains members of the four Nigerian partner organizations in financial management, management information systems, monitoring and evaluation, and proposal development.  COMPASS’ Management Organizational Sustainability Tool (MOST) enables Nigerian partners to assess their management systems, identify what needs to be changed to make management more effective, develop plans for implementing the changes, and generate support from staff for management improvements.

COMPASS has supplied computers and printers to Nigerian partners to support and further strengthen their financial and information technology units.  The Project is also supporting partners to develop their 5-year strategic plans.

Supporting NGO Sub-grantees

COMPASS supports its NGO sub-grantees by encouraging systems and practices to facilitate successful grants management. Using the Organizational Capacity Assessment Tool (OCAT), COMPASS assesses sub-grantees for their management capacity and works with sub-grantees to identify weaknesses and challenges, develop action plans, and provide fundamental management expertise while also providing training on proposal development and monitoring and evaluation.

The COMPASS Institutional Capacity Unit will continue to address organizational stability of sub-grantees by engaging them in developing tools for sustainability.
