Approach to Implementation

Trainings
COMPASS provides healthcare workers (physicians, nurses, midwives, traditional birth attendants, and community health extension workers) with trainings in modern family planning methods, life-saving skills, and postabortion care. Service providers also receive training to effectively address the reproductive health needs of youth clients.

COMPASS also supports training in permanent and long-term family planning methods (i.e. vasectomy, tubal ligation, IUD and implants) at three university teaching hospitals.  

COMPASS has oriented health facility supervisors on standards of practice and has conducted trainings on supervising quality of services.  The standards of practice, clinical protocols, and job aids pertaining to reproductive health, family planning, and safe motherhood are currently being used in hospitals and clinics throughout Nigeria. 

Health Facility Upgrades
To reinforce improvements in the quality of service delivery, COMPASS has renovated and refurbished health facilities.  Improvements include partitioning for increased privacy, creating waiting areas, installing new roofs, windows, doors and locks, as well as painting and repairing faulty plumbing and electrical wires.

By the end of the project, COMPASS plans to upgrade more than 50 facilities into model quality sites. In addition, more than 200 health facilities will be supplied with family planning commodities, prenatal care equipment, and birth kits.

In addition to improving the delivery of primary health care, COMPASS will be working with four secondary care specialist hospitals.  The hospitals will be upgraded to training centers for life-saving skills and family planning services. 

Over the life of the Project, COMPASS will provide assistance for improving the quality of services in close to 800 health facilities.
