USAID recognized for work on COMPASS Polio project

Nigeria [May 2006]

On May 16, 2009 the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Nigeria was presented with an award certificate as “Outstanding Development Partner” by the coalition of non-governmental organizations in Zamfara State. The award was made in recognition of USAID’s contributions in health and community mobilization through implementing partners that operate programs in the state.

Pathfinder International is the managing partner for the Community Participation for Action in the Social Sector (COMPASS) project, one of the largest integrated health and education projects in Africa. COMPASS has been playing a prominent role in the fight against polio in Zamfara and 10 other states in Nigeria. The COMPASS Polio project educates community members, especially local religious and traditional groups, on the importance of polio immunization to reach full vaccination coverage against the disease. COMPASS also implements a range of reproductive health, child survival, and basic education initiatives in five of the project states.

Special adviser to the Zamfara state governor, Mallam Garba Dakin Takos and the chairman of the Zamfara NGO coalition, Mallam Ibrahim Tudu made the presentation to USAID/Nigeria.
